Running with Your Dog

Running with Your Dog-Aug-2020

Are you considering running with your dog? Running with your pup is a great way to get yourself and your dog in shape but there are a few things to consider before you start:

  • Consider age and breed: many dogs may love the outdoors but not all dogs are built for long distance running. Running with your dog should not begin until your dog is full grown. Consult with your veterinarian before running with your pup to ensure they will be safe with long distance running.
  • Use a leash: even if your dog is well trained, you should always run using a leash. This can help you maintain control of your pup and the pace of the run.
  • Start slowly: don’t begin running with your dog by going on a 10-mile run. Start off with a few slow miles and progressively increase the length and time of your run. Pay attention to your dog to help them not overdo it.
  • Keep your dog hydrated: just as you need to stay hydrated on runs, so does your dog. Bring a dog specific water bottle along that has a reservoir for your dog to drink out of.
  • Be weather aware: for runs during the summer, do not run in the mid-heat of the day. Keep your dog cool by running early in the morning or leaving your dog at home if it is too hot. Hot pavement can burn your dog’s paws and overheating can be extremely unsafe, even fatal.
  • Have fun! Keep your dog safe during runs but have fun and use this time as a great way to give your dog exercise and bond with your pup.
